I read this and think how different and yet alike our stories are. One of my favorite philosophical phrases: transcendental criteria for adjudication. Feel free to use it whenever.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me, but like you, I've never lived alone. My time line is: Parents. Military. Parents. College. Parents. Marriage. I've always imagined or rather fantasized about living alone (like a good Hobbit). And I have greatly enjoyed those rare times when I was actually alone —motorcycle trips, especially from Key West to Anchorage. But mostly I have felt alone for all but a brief time during college. Even in the military, I often ended up with assignments that I fufilled apart from the rest of the division. My work history often had me working alone with the owner of the company or having job assignments that separated me from the rest of the workforce. To be fair, often this was because my employers knew that I could accomplish the task at hand without help and that I could do it without lollygagging. As much as I took pride in being so trusted, it also separated me from the herd who often did not let me play in their reindeer games. Why do we feel so alone even in the midst of a crowd?
