grocery shopping.

“at least at the grocery store there is nobody who knows there is nobody in love with me”

This is a line from a young poet. I’m sorry I don’t know her name. I saw a short clip of spoken word and it stuck with me.

She pushed the cart up the aisle without looking. It was nearly three o’clock. She had to leave soon if she was to make her appointment with her shrink but she kept pushing the cart, walking up the aisles. It occurred to her that if she missed the appointment she would still have to pay for the appointment, the thought causing a small ripple of something snarkyish that drifted off. Placing a long French loaf in the basket, she tore off the end and enjoying the crisp flakiness of the bread, wishing for some sharp cheese, stomach rumbling, had she eaten this morning, shrugging the thought back into the gray.

Mom shopper passed with two in the cart, draped in cereal boxes. They exchanged quick smiles. Women smile at her all the time. She wonders what they see. Do they see just another woman doing woman stuff or do they see another woman with a million sorrows welling up inside about to burst the dam, ready to break apart at any given second. Is the smile a hold on sweetie…it’ll pass, or a me too but it get’s better or a wtf, or just a nod of recognition/resignation.

Or maybe nothing at all other than she’s not a threat in any way. She’s too much a nothing to be a threat in any way at all to anyone at all ever just a small piece of a soul without much light left to it anymore floating along, benign, powerless, without. Tired.

Realizing she’s eaten half the bread, she places it on a shelf, leaves the near empty cart, heads towards checkout with a bottle of wine.

“Did you find everything you need today?”

She startles, looks at the cashier. “not even close”.

The cashier rings her through, now silent.

As she exits, she turns back, “thank you”

Yet another smile.

she's quite good. I loved the words but I found her delivery a bit sheepish - very young.

What a sad and poignant story. Well written.

(and then there's the part of me that's upset that she didn't pay for the bread)

Neil is a fairly well-known slam poet. I love this one>>>
" OCD the first time I saw her everything in my head went quiet.
The first time I saw her,
Everything in my head went quiet.
All the ticks, all the constantly refreshing images just disappeared.
When you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, you don't really get quiet moments.
Even in bed, I'm thinking:
Did I lock the doors? Yes.
Did I wash my hands? Yes.
Did I lock the doors? Yes.
Did I wash my hands? Yes.
But when I saw her, the only thing I could think about was the hairpin curve of her lips..
Or the eyelash on her cheek-
the eyelash on her cheek-
the eyelash on her cheek.
I knew I had to talk to her.
I asked her out six times in thirty seconds."

and it goes on.

" Did you find everything that you need?"
I've often joked, "where is all the peace and acceptance? In what aisle would that be in?" And now having joked about that...

Whenever I put my credit or debit card into a reader, and it says "Accepted!" I always joke with the cashier, "Look, I'm accepted! This is a miracle!"

Oui…

By way of a preface--this comment is meant to lighten your mood--honest...

I go shopping about every 6-7 weeks. That's 'cause I'm 35 miles from town... and (mostly) gas is pushin' $4/gal. SO... needless to say.

And I never leave my mountain without a list of items I'm in need of. Funny thing--I don't remember ever havin' "acceptance" appear on that list. Not to say I necessarily don't need to be accepted; but I try to be content in all circumstances--most of which rarely bring contentment.

I ran across a "babe" at the heath-store, back a bit ago. I was carrying a couple gallons of aloha very juice to the checkout stand. She says, "Is that stuff any good?"

"Why yes--yes it is", I replied.

"What's it do for ya?"

"Well, it's like an 'au naturale' antibiotic... and it's good for pumpin' up your immune system."

"Ah..." she says.

"Yeah; and it also keeps ya from agin'. Look at me--you'd never believe I was 84 years old... would ya?"

"You're kidding--right?", as her mouth slowly opened almost wide enough to swallow the whole thing.

"Yeah--you're right. I'm yankin' your chain. Actually, I'm only 83."

She did not smile--and I sure weren't no threat to her, bein's how I really am old and frail.

A tidbit of wiz-dome: Whatever shape their lips are in, if their eyes ain't smilin'... they ain't gonna be appreciating no harmless joke, either.

Here's a short ditty for ya--

There's been times when you've been lonesome
'cause you've been 20,000 thoughts away from me.
Yet ya still wish I could be there just a-holdin' you...
and lovin' you the way that you love me.
It's so hard to get a message to ya--
ain't there no way that I can make ya see?
I don't wanna steal yer soul; I don't wanna own yer life...
I'd be content if you'd just spread yer legs for me..

Solar...
