What was.......

your treat growing up?

There are three of us. Dad worked hard Mum stayed home to look after us, so there wasn't much money to spend on treats.

We all looked forward to Friday nights for two reasons.... no school in the morning and Friday night was treat night.

What was our treat? A Kit Kat and a big glass of milk. Doesn't sound much, but to us it something to look forward to.

So many are so spoilt these days it makes you wonder if they appreciate or just expect to get things. Things that cost a lot more than a Kit Kat and glass of milk, but to the three of us, it was something special.

Hmm interesting memories. I'd always look forward to the Kraft Caramels and those tiny Oh - Henry bars.. Hmmm Then with the kids, well, I would enjoy Halloween again.... 👻🎃

My treat was a home made ice cream soda on a Saturday night. Like your parents...My Dad worked and my Mum stayed at home.

Children now get so much it's madness. My little Irish dancer is completely ruined....not by her Mum or me but by her other gran....she only has to ask and she gets....no matter what. She will never know the value of money.

Halloween's not that big here, but is growing each year. Because I live at the back of the main house in a flat, I don't get to see all the kids in their wonderful costumes, so this year I decorated a tree with ghosts, spiders etc.

It's a shame the little girl is being so spoilt. It's hard not to spoil children, but it can go too far.

My mom was a single parent back when there was no such recognition. She worked three jobs so treats were very rare. My favorite was when she made hamburgers and wholewheat toast for breakfast on Sunday morning and we ate out doors under the cherry tree. Skip Halloween-

Our treats were usually something homemade. Mom made some great cookies. Used to love when we'd make homemade ice cream. With the old hand crank ice cream maker. good times.

I don't ever remember being deprived, but then I can't recall specific treats, either. We were just happy with what we got, when we got it.

A special treat was always going for a Sunday drive, and a picnic - usually with the grand-parents joining us in their car. It was a TREAT, because it was not eating a meal at home, around the kitchen table.

I agree - kids nowadays take lots of things that we would have considered "very special", for granted.

Warm Fresh Baked Brownies, (home made no less and there were "no" brownie mix boxes anywhere at the time, with Big Paper Shell Pecans on placed top and the glass of milk too! Seems so many, feel that they are "entitled" and deserve something for doing nothing. Think that just maybe? Parenting skills are lacking the discipline and responsibility necessary to teach and educate our children and children's children, so that they have an even better, safer and more positive productive constructive life! Just some un-requested, yet shared thoughts.

Yep, I agree, people think I am crazy when I tell them I work off of what I need instead of wants.

The only shakes I knew as a child was the powder that came out of a tin that you mixed into a glass of milk. The choice was... chocolate or strawberry. Maybe banana came along later.

Always nice to see you pop in.

No Halloween when we were growing up.

Don't remember having burgers growing up.

What a wonderful Mother you had. A lot harder and probably no hand outs back then.

I bet it made you feel pretty special being allowed to have some of your parents much needed (at times) sugar fix.

I bet the ice cream tasted so much nicer back then. Just pure ingredients and made with a lot of love.

I love custard with just about anything, and don't get me started on chocolate, so am sure I'd like to try a chcolate Rice Krispy ring.

Some Sunday's when the ice cream van came around, we were sent out to buy a block of ice cream for our pudding.

Would love to see you break dance.

We used to go for picnic's down by the river. Dad would throw a line in, but it was rare for him to catch enough for our dinner.

There's nothing like homemade cakes and slices. The hard part was smelling them cooking and have to wait for them to cool down enough for us to eat.

I'm with you. There's not much I want, happy with what I've got, although a small lotto win would help.

I grew up in a tiny village where the only shop was connected to the petrol station, but once that closed there was nothing. So treats were very very rare.

Contrast that with arriving at primary school where my classmates were already eating crisps (back in the day when you got more crisps than air in a bag) and sweets before 9am.

So it was never really a thing in our family and I was fine with that. Sure we got selection boxes and tins of chocolates at the end of the year, but nothing through the rest of the year.

I remember the days when the choice of crisps were.... plain with a small blue bag of salt inside.

I bet you looked forward to the end of the year.

Occasional trips to Baskin Robbins for an ice cream. It wasn't every week, nor even every month. My dad loves their ice cream...
